Cigarette smoking causes more than a dozen types of cancer.  Discuss with your doctor on how you can quit it.  Your heart rate and blood pressure drop 20 minutes after quitting tobacco use.  Your shortness of breath and coughing reduce 1 to 9 months after quitting too.  Circulation improves and there is an improvement in the lung function in just a few weeks after quitting.  Your risk of coronary heart disease is of a non-smoker’s 15 years after quitting.  The life expectancy for smokers is 10 years less than that of non-smokers.  The younger you quit the greater the reduction in health risks.

Cut Back on Alcohol

Heavy drinking causes health issues.  Alcohol consumption can be classified into three broad categories.  Moderate drinking is the equivalent of 2 drinks per day for men.  Heavy drinking is equal to 4 or more drinks for men.  Binge drinking is considered 5 or more drinks in one sitting.  The more alcohol you drink over time, the higher your risk of developing cancer.  It may cause head and neck cancer, esophageal cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer or colorectal cancer.  It also increases the risk of melanoma, prostate and pancreatic cancers.  People who use both tobacco and alcohol are at much higher risk of developing cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx and esophagus than if you were to consume only one of them.  In general, the more alcohol you drink, the greater your risk of cancer becomes.
